Dolphin day and Portuguese Man O’War

Today we had really nice encounters with common dolphins and Risso’s dolphins. The group of common dolphins was foraging and actual feeding was likely occurring as evidenced by the presence Cory’s shearwaters and common terns.

Seabirds often take advantage of the cooperative behaviour of dolphins searching for food, following them and partaking to the final banquet. Common terns were feeding at surface, mostly taking advantage of the leftovers. One of the shearwaters, on the other hand, took a dive.

Did you know that shearwaters can dive more than 10 meters to catch fish?

On the way back, close to the Ilhéu, we saw a beautiful Portuguese Man O’War. Lately we are not seeing many of them, so it was nice to spot it floating at the surface.
