Bleaching of coral reefs became a worldwide issue due to human activities, one of them being the use of sunscreen.

During the beginning of the year Palau became the first Pacific island to ban harmful sunscreens containing one of the 10 chemicals that are harmful to corals. A 1,000$ fine will be charged to establishments selling sunscreen that contain these chemicals. Tourist bringing into the country these products may be facing confiscation from authorities at customs.
