Happy World Turtle Day!

Hello everybody and happy World Turtle Day!

That is, today several association worldwide are raising awareness on our reptilian friends and the threats that they face in Oceans and on Land. As Terra Azul, we commit to support research on sea turtles and every year we help the COSTA project to collect data on Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta). You can learn more about this project of Florida University in our previous post HERE!

When possible, we measure the turtle and deploy a tag on its fins so it can be identified (see the picture of a turtle tagged by Terra Azul in 2019 below). In the long term, this helps understanding their movements in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

In case we encounter much larger species, such as Leatherback Turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) this is not really possible as they can weight more than 500 kg!!!

So, to use the expression of the American Tortoise Rescue, let’s “shellebrate” and take this occasion to learn more about these amazing creatures and how to help their protection 🙂
