You don’t need to be a declared wonder to be worth of a visit. This is the case of the little Lagoa do Congro, an encrusted jewel amidst a lushly vegetation. Found in the proximity of Vila Franca do Campo parish on the south coast of São Miguel Island, this little lake measures about 500m of diameter and is located in a maar crater. Maar craters are the result of volcanic explosions occurring in the absence of a volcanic cone where the ejected materials form a low profile edge. The rim is covered by a rich vegetation of a varied green tones. It is possible to hike around the lake immersed in a silent atmosphere interrupted only by the song of little birds. The lake is of particular importance for some migratory bird species, which find here a place to rest and feed. Fauna of the lake include the carp (Cyprinus sp.), the perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the protected crested newt (Triturus cristatus carnifex).

Among the trees there is also a path leading to another smaller lake, Lagoa dos Nenúfares, even more hidden and difficult to reach. This lake is characterized by the presence of water lilies which give the name to the lake.
A perfect place to visit if you want to relax and get a green (not gin :D) tonic!
