Today, once again, we were “grounded” due to the poor weather conditions and stayed in the office day-dreaming about our last sightings. From now on, on bad weather days, we will be sharing with you some fun facts about the species that can be found in the archipelago of the Azores.

On our last tours, we have been seeing the majestic blue whales! These amazing animals are the biggest known species to have ever existed, measuring up to 33 meters and weighing around 150 000 kg. This is only possible because the water helps to support their weight, if they lived on land they wouldn’t be able to move! Interestingly, these gentle giants feed exclusively on krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans that are only a couple centimetres long.

blue whales, as other baleen whales, pass by Azorean waters during the Spring on their way to their favourite feeding areas. During the past years, Terra Azul has seen blue whales from March to June, with most sights being registered in April and May so we are very excited to see what’s in store!

Keep tuned for more news and fun facts!
