Starting the month with greetings from Common Dolphins!

Hello everyone!

Another month has started and the better way to celebrate it is by going to the sea and be in contact with nature and wildlife! After the briefing we went to see some wildlife. The encounter for this morning was with Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). The group had around 40 dolphins and they were travelling with juveniles and really small calves with fetal folds still visible. These vertical stripes along the body are the consequence of the position in which the calf grows during the gestation period (around 12 months). They generally disappear in about two weeks from the delivery. We could see that sometimes the calves would leave the mother for a few moments to swim a bit faster and check our boat, which made us really happy to see young life around.

We then went closer to the coast to make our way back to the Ilheu. On the way we showed where one of our vigias (‘land observer’ in Portuguese) scan the Ocean looking for whales and dolphins. In good visibility conditions they can see a whale blow up to 20 nautical miles out (around 37 kilometers)!
