Hello everyone! Today the sea conditions weren’t so good so, unfortunately, we stayed on land ☹ Nevertheless in these days we always have something for you guys, and today we will bring you something about our beautiful Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba).
This is a migratory species who turns up in the Azores and that can be seen mostly in summer, between May and October, when the water is still warm.
They have a very distinct pattern with blue and white stripes along the body and, just like the other dolphins, with a lighter belly. The male Striped dolphin is measured between 1.8-2.7 meters and the females 1.9-2.4 meters. This dolphin feeds on fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, although their diet varies according to the location.
This species is very active and when we see them on the sea they are very fast. They are very acrobatic dolphins! When they’re socializing they can jump up to 7 meters above the surface, that’s pretty impressive! In the Azores they mostly pass by and they don’t approach vessels very much, although on the Mediterranean Sea they’re actually more active and approach vessels more often.
