A Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) rises its head to take a breath before to dive. Loggerheads can reach a weight of almost 100 kg and inhabit primarily temperate waters.
Also today we spent the morning surrounded by several groups of Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) involved in prolonged (and really loud!) vocalizations and socializing activities.
During our search to the East we had a close encounter with a Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta Caretta). It emerged a couple of times close to Terra Azul boat but it was not possible to approach it to attempt the identification/tagging procedure.
Terra Azul collaborates with the COnsolidating Sea Turtle conservation in the Azores (COSTA). This research project is investigating the distribution and movements of sea turtles in the Northern Atlantic Ocean and its yearly update will be soon available. Stay tuned for more news about these fascinating reptiles! 🙂
