Another spectacular day in the Azores; Where even during cloudy weather, our Vigias are able to spot wildlife. Spotting marine mammals from land is a technique that has been mastered during decades by Azorians, it basically consists on observing the ocean from land and spotting the slightest movement.
Our morning tour started out when we received the location of a pod of common dolphins that were interacting between each other in different interesting ways. Trying to understand the behaviour of pod is always something challenging that is not fully understood by the scientific community. But observing animals in their natural environment always provides us with an interesting portrait of what might be going on regarding the social interaction of dolphins.
One of the common dolphins that was part of the group kept jumping and slapping its body against the water. We can only speculate on why this young individual was doing this, but the special moment was successfully captured by our colleague.
Our tour continued with the sighting of a small group of striped dolphins. striped dolphins is a species that is less curious towards vessels. So it is always nice to be able to show the difference in behaviour regarding dolphins. After observing them and identifying the species we decided to head back to our base.
We are lucky to observe different species of animals in Azores, during this tour we also observed two different sized juvenile loggerhead turtles. The fact that we can observe them means that their survival was successful and seeing them is always something special.
So all in all another beautiful day at sea for our customers and crew.
