It’s good to be back !!!

Mornings at sea are as good as drinking a nice cup of coffee under the rain, or enjoying a full moon in a remote place.

The morning started with an enthusiastic group of lovely guests excited to be out at sea.

Risso’s Dolphins (Grampus griseus) where sighted by our lookout girl “Nicole”, she sighted the animals just outside of our beautiful Vila Franca do Campo. Usually when Risso’s Dolphins pod are sighted close to shore, in this case only two nautical miles out, the reason  often being because it is a nursing pod with small babies that can not deep dive, since we all know these amazing dolphins are deep divers.

 

The trip continued to observe a pod of Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that had given birth to new members ! The animals were foraging, which is fancy word to explain that basically animals are searching for food in order to feed themselves and when doing so, a lot of cooperation between the group is needed to assure the survival of the whole group.

When observing the animals, “Filipe” our lookout man, sighted a blow, 8 miles (like the movie from that famous rapper ) out and accompanied the boat to indicate the exact location where a big animal was sighted, it was a Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus).

The animal then dove in order to continue the search for the giant seven arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus). 

 

And last but not least, we are so happy to sight one of our favourite species (despite all of them being awesome), the Spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis), we love them so much because the are so lovely and curious and usually travel in big pods wich mesmerizes crew and guests, here is a pick of a Spottie from our library to show how cool they are and why they are called spotted. They usually arrive in summer.

 

We could not be happier to be out there in the Ocean and what a good feeling to share that with all our guests.

Let’s see what other adventures the ocean has for us…as a good Biologist would say “Happy as a clam” !
