Karaoke time with Spotted Dolphins!

Today we had another proof of how curious dolphins can be.

After encountering a small pod of juvenile Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) interacting with a larger group of Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis), we got literally surrounded by hundreds of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis).

As we dropped our hydrophone a chorus of dolphins filled the air, and some of them decided to investigate what was that cable doing in the water! We could feel them biting the hydrophone and pull it underwater like a toy, while producing a full repertoire of whistles, groans, moans and echolocation clicks! You can judge yourself from the video we took from the boat, a real time dolphin karaoke session which lasted until we gently removed the hydrophone from the water to avoid damage! 😀 😀 😀
