Blainville’s Beaked Whales yesterday!

Yesterday we had a perfect sighting of Blainville’s Beaked Whales!

Usually Beaked Whales are very very shy, therefore very hard to sight and identify. But not yesterday! Yesterday we sighted 2 Females with their 2 calves and a huge Male! On the picture above you can see him on the left side of the photo. We can see the huge teeth on the sides of his lower jaw.

That said, only males have teeth. In the females the teeth stay hidden within the gum.

Blainville’s Beaked Whales can reach 4 to 5 meters, males being larger than females, and can weigh up to 1000 kilos. Calves are born around 1.9 meters.

What an amazing treat!!

Stay tuned for more updates on our tours! 🙂
