Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) wandering around Azorian waters.
Whale hello there,
This morning we started with good weather, a flat ocean and a big group of Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis).
After enjoying the dolphins being very social to the Terra Azul boat we got a message from our Vigias that they spotted a group of Sperm Whales (Physeter macrocephalus) close to the coast. They were 3 individuals, appearing to the surface after a dive of about 20 minutes.
A while later we waved the Sperm Whales goodbye because our Vigias informed us they saw something huge.
Three Humpback Whales!
One of them really enormous, cruising next to our boat, burning an image on our retina, creating a lifetime memory for us all. When you see how they roll off their massive body that ends with a perfect fluke, it’s like your heart skips a few beats. It was very clear that the appearance of those sympathic giants touched the emotional strings of all our lucky witnesses today.
They just kept swimming close in our area, taking many short dives, showing their flukes at least 15 times. They allowed us to take useful pictures for photo-identification.
