What happens when the unexpected happens and you just don’t know how to react?. Well, let me tell you about yesterday. We navigated into the open ocean. When we arrived out there, we saw the beautiful Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), swimming as enthusiastic as usually. But in the same area we could observe swimming in the waves the most beautiful 4 coloured cetacean known as the Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis). The colors of the Common Dolphins under the bright Atlantic blue ocean is pretty cool.
We navigated close to coast, our lookout had radioded to let us know that a whale blow had been sighted, we thought it was pretty likely a Sperm Whale since Baleen whales are rare in Summer. But guess what…. it was a Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), Woowwwww !!! I could not believe it, she was tail slapping and interacting with the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis). She was just there following the dolphins and breathing, we were really able to see its ventral grooves under water, since they change the color of the water changing it from deep blue into turquoise colors. I guess we were really not expecting it but my God what a great day.
ohhh it is over you might think, not even close. We navigated again to observe Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) resting at the surface only then to continue their search for squid underwater.
Whenever we have crazy tours like this one I like to make sure to pass along the message that nature is truly something beautiful and we should be always grateful to experience animals in their natural habitat. And remember seeing animals in their natural environment is a privilege not a right. =)
