First things first.
As always, dolphins put a smile on everyone’s face. Today was no different, our devoted friends didn’t disappoint us. We saw Common and Bottlenose Dolphins, both resident species here in the Azores. Mixed groups with a lot of cute babies.
In the morning as well in the afternoon we encountered a giant male Sperm Whale, also known as a bull. The size of a bull is about 15 to 19 meters and they can weigh more than 50 tons. The last couple of days we had a lot of sightings of male Sperm Whales. We could even identify Mr. Liable (our most famous bull in the Azorian waters) by his recognizable fluke.
In the morning trip we were also surprised by some special visitors: we saw Blue Sharks and Swordfish.
Blue Sharks are pelagic, open-water animals that are roaming around the deep waters of the nine islands of the Azores.
The Swordfish was pointed out by our experienced skipper Nuno. It’s far from common to have sightings of these species so close to shore, so it was a very special occurrence.
